Window shades and dimming airplane lights

Dimming airplane lights is one of the usual security procedures while taking off and landing. Dimming lights help the passengers to feel quickly adapted to the level of light during the emergency evacuation. Even in case the cabin fell with smoke, passengers’ eyes can be adjusted to lights and can see instructions and directions signs in the aisles and exits.

Also, window shades do not need to be up to let the passengers see the view, but also help them to adjust their eyes to the surrounding vision in emergency situations. Especially in case plane’s lights go out, they can move quickly. Every second in an emergency can make a difference. Keeping windows shades up helps the crew members to see the outside position. In case one door isn’t safe, they can lead the passengers to another safe one.

The upright position of the seat

The elbow seat may be an obstacle and prevent the passengers in the behind seat from moving quickly during emergency. The quicker the evacuation, the safer the passengers. According to FAA, the perfect time for evacuation is 90 seconds and the position of elbowing makes the quick movement of the passengers harder.

Carrying liquids

Passengers can carry liquids in their carry-on in two conditions: Bottles of liquids should be 3.4 ounces or smaller and they must fit into a clear bag no bigger than one quart. The safety measures of liquids were changed in August 2016, the UK government declared a terror plot to blow up flights between England and North America with an explosive cocktail disguised in soda bottles. After this accident, liquids were banned from carry on entirely. The transportation security administration (TSA) and the department of homeland security (DHS) make explosion tests to determine that liquids, gels, and aerosols are safe to bring aboard an airplane in limited quantities. Liquid bottles must be put in one bag to make the security process easier.

Putting the tray table up before landing and take-off

Take-off and landing are considered the most sensitive procedures in the flight. According to a report from Boeing in 2017, 61% of accidents between 2007 and 2016 happened during the take-off, landing, final approach, or initial climb. Putting the tray table up frees the aisle to the passengers during the emergency evacuation.
