On November 6, Malaysia Airlines announced the first-ever flight of its Airbus A330neo aircraft. The aircraft, temporarily registered as F-WWCZ, took off from Toulouse Blagnac Airport (TLS) at 14:37 local time, flying for approximately three hours and 35 minutes before returning to the French airport. This inaugural flight was just the beginning, with the aircraft expected to undergo several more test flights before its final delivery to Malaysia Airlines. Current estimates suggest that the carrier will officially receive the A330-900 later in November, with plans to register it as 9M-MNG.
Malaysia Airlines A330-900 Order
Malaysia Airlines’ investment in the A330neo is a significant step in the modernization of its fleet. In August 2022, the airline placed an order for 20 A330-900 aircraft—10 to be purchased directly and an additional 10 to be leased from Avolon. For the 10 aircraft purchased, Malaysia Airlines has decided on a sale-and-leaseback (SLB) arrangement with Avolon, ensuring a flexible yet financially efficient integration of these aircraft.

A Natural Progression for Malaysia Airlines’ Fleet
According to Izham Ismail, CEO of Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG)—the parent company of Malaysia Airlines—the A330neo represents a seamless transition from the airline’s existing A330ceo fleet. Current fleet records reveal that Malaysia Airlines operates 15 A330-300s and three A330F freighters. By transitioning to the A330-900, the airline aims to enhance fuel efficiency, reduce emissions, and optimize operations, all while providing passengers with a modernized cabin experience.
Delivery Timeline and Minor Delays
The arrival of the first A330-900 was initially scheduled for the third quarter of 2024, with Malaysia Airlines eager to introduce four A330-900 aircraft and eight Boeing 737 MAX 8s throughout the year. However, a delay occurred when Airbus identified issues during the aircraft’s flight line stage. Consequently, the delivery timeline was adjusted from September to November.
Despite the setback, MAG is working closely with Airbus and Avolon to finalize a new delivery schedule, aiming to expedite the aircraft’s entry into service. According to recent updates, Malaysia Airlines expects to receive five A330neo aircraft by the first quarter of 2025, accelerating the fleet renewal strategy.

In addition to the A330-900, Malaysia Airlines has also been bolstering its narrowbody fleet. As of this year, the airline has taken delivery of two Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. However, industry-wide challenges have affected delivery timelines, including negotiations with Boeing and Air Lease Corporation (ALC) to manage any potential delays.
The delays have been further complicated by the recent labor strike impacting Boeing’s operations. Over 33,000 members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) District Lodge 751 and District W24 were involved in a strike, which was only resolved with a new contract approval on November 4. Malaysia Airlines, like many other airlines, has had to navigate these external factors to maintain a smooth fleet expansion plan.
