Emirates SkyCargo, the cargo division of Emirates, has announced a significant expansion to its fleet with a firm order for five additional Boeing 777 Freighters. This order, valued at $1 billion.
Strategic Growth and Enhanced Capacity
This latest order will increase Emirates SkyCargo’s main deck cargo capacity by 30%, with deliveries scheduled between 2025 and 2026. The move is part of the airline’s long-term strategic plan to bolster its fleet and maintain high service standards for its customers. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and CEO of Emirates Airline and Group, highlighted the importance of this expansion:
“Demand for our world-class product and services is growing exponentially, further amplified by Dubai’s Economic Agenda which aims to double foreign trade and reinforce the city’s position as a global trading hub. This investment in additional Boeing 777 capacity enables us to cater to customer demand and marks a step forward in our long-term strategic growth plan.”
Record Performance and Future Fleet Planning
The airline has experienced exceptional performance in the first quarter of the 2024/25 financial year, with load factors and tonnages surpassing pre-pandemic levels. The new freighters will support Emirates SkyCargo in meeting the increased demand, particularly in key markets across the US and Europe.
Emirates SkyCargo is also evaluating its future freighter fleet to ensure it remains responsive to market demands. This includes a comprehensive review of all aircraft options to continue operating one of the youngest and most efficient fleets in the world.
Advanced Freighter Capabilities
The Boeing 777 Freighter, renowned for being the world’s most capable twin-engine freighter, offers a range of 4,970 nautical miles (9,200 kilometers) and a revenue payload capacity of 102 metric tons. This makes it ideal for long-range, non-stop flights that connect the Middle East with key global markets.
Boeing’s 777 Freighter complements its existing 777 family and the 747 Freighter, contributing to Boeing’s record of over 265 deliveries of this model to date. Stephanie Pope, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Planes, expressed pride in Emirates’ continued trust in Boeing:
“We are honored that Emirates SkyCargo, renowned for operational excellence and innovation, has once again selected the Boeing 777 Freighter to extend the reach of its global network. We deeply value Emirates’ trust in the Boeing widebody family and are committed to supporting their long-term strategic growth plan.”
Fleet Modernization and Expansion
In addition to the new order, Emirates is converting ten 777-300ERs to freighters, aiming to have a fleet of 17 freighters by 2025. The airline’s extensive passenger fleet, which includes 777s, A380s, and soon A350s, along with its freighter fleet, will continue to support efficient global cargo movement.
