On November 26, 2024, the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) announced federal charges against a passenger who attempted to exit an aircraft midair during American Airlines flight 1915, the previous week. The individual, identified as Abdul-al-Jabbar Oloruntoba Olaiya, aged 29, has been charged with interfering with a flight crew by assault or intimidation while onboard a U.S.-registered aircraft. Leigha Simonton, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas, confirmed the charges.
The incident occurred on November 19, approximately two hours into a flight from Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport (MKE) to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW). The flight was American Airlines Flight 1915, a scheduled daily morning flight between Milwaukee and Dallas. The flight was operated by an 11-year-old Airbus A319-115, with a registration of N9010R.

The Disruption Midair
According to witness accounts and DOJ documents, Olaiya reportedly approached a flight attendant, expressing his desire to exit the aircraft mid-flight. When denied, he became increasingly agitated, escalating his tone and behavior. Suddenly, he attempted to force his way to the cabin door. Recognizing the potential danger, the flight attendant called for assistance, gesturing to nearby passengers to intervene.
Passenger Intervention
Three passengers quickly responded to the flight attendant’s silent call for help. They subdued the unruly passenger using duct tape to restrain his wrists and ankles, ensuring he could not access the door. One of the passengers later reported that Olaiya repeatedly claimed he was the “captain of the flight” and insisted he must disembark immediately. Reports revealed that Olaiya, who identified as Canadian and mentioned undergoing therapy, was ultimately subdued in the forward galley of the aircraft.
Law Enforcement Response Upon Landing
Upon landing in Dallas, law enforcement officers, including the FBI and the DFW Airport Department of Public Safety, boarded the aircraft. By this time, Olaiya was still being restrained by passengers. Authorities removed him from the aircraft in a wheelchair, ensuring he received a psychological evaluation.
Impact on Crew and Passengers
The flight attendant involved in the initial confrontation sustained injuries to her wrist and neck and required hospital treatment. One of the assisting passengers mentioned using a bear hug to separate Olaiya from the flight attendant during the altercation.
American Airlines swiftly addressed the incident, stating:
“The safety and security of our customers and team members is our top priority, and we thank our team members and customers for managing a difficult situation.”
Details of the Charges
The charges against Olaiya, while significant, remain allegations until proven in court. As clarified in the DOJ’s statement:
“A criminal complaint is merely an allegation of criminal conduct, not evidence. Mr. Olaiya is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.”
If convicted, Olaiya could face a maximum of 20 years in federal prison. The FBI and DFW Airport’s Department of Public Safety continue to investigate the incident, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Levi Thomas prosecuting the case.
Clarifying Unanswered Questions
Initially, some details of the incident remained unclear. However, DOJ documents have since revealed additional insights. Witness reports indicate that Olaiya became increasingly frustrated with a flight attendant in the forward galley before proclaiming himself the “captain” and demanding to exit the aircraft. The confrontation escalated when he rushed the flight attendant as she blocked his path to the door.
Passengers and crew effectively neutralized the threat, enabling the aircraft to land safely. The flight crew requested priority landing at DFW and expedited taxi clearance.
