A joint agreement between Archer Aviation and key organizations will introduce electric flying taxis in Abu Dhabi, marking the first commercial electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft operations in the region.
The introduction of air taxis in the capital of the UAE shows the city’s commitment to sustainable urban development and its goal to lead in smart transportation technologies globally. With operations scheduled to start in 2026, Abu Dhabi is preparing for a new era of mobility.
Partners Behind the Initiative
The leading player in this project is Archer Aviation, a U.S. company with its eVTOL aircraft. It has chosen its flagship model, Midnight, to spearhead the effort. With its fast, quiet, and eco-friendly design, Midnight aims to transform urban travel.
Supporting this initiative is a group of organizations with expertise in aviation, infrastructure, and regulations.
- Abu Dhabi Investment Office: ADIO will be supporting the project with whatever is necessary to make it a success.
- General Civil Aviation Authority: GCAA will focus on safety certification and regulatory work associated with the operation of eVTOLs.
- Abu Dhabi Airports and Etihad Aviation Training: Infrastructure and pilot training are critical elements of the system.
- Falcon Aviation Services and Global Air Navigation Services: The companies contribute to smooth operation in logistics and navigation.
This collaborative approach secures the project on solid ground, placing Abu Dhabi at the forefront of next-generation transportation solutions.
Electric Air Taxis and How They Work
Electric air taxis represent the next generation in urban transport, merging speed, sustainability, and convenience. Designed for short-distance travel, eVTOL aircraft such as Midnight can reach 150 mph, completely avoiding ground traffic.
Since they run on electric batteries, these aircraft are eco-friendly and quiet. Able to take off and land vertically, they require minimal infrastructure, making it easier to integrate them into city environments.
Archer Aviation’s Midnight is designed to fly passengers over busy cities, offering a faster alternative to road travel. This helps reduce congestion and the emissions that result from it.
Infrastructure and Regulations of Flying Taxis
The initiative relies heavily on infrastructure development and strict regulatory requirements. Abu Dhabi Airport authorities are leading the development of vertiports, which are centrally located nodes for eVTOL takeoffs, landings, and passenger services. These facilities will be positioned strategically within the city to enhance connectivity and accessibility.
Meanwhile, Etihad Aviation Training is creating specific pilot training programs for eVTOL technology. These programs will equip operators with the competencies needed to fly the aircraft safely and efficiently.
Archer Aviation is also working closely with the GCAA on the path to regulatory approval. This includes workshops and certification processes that align the project with the UAE’s high safety and operational standards.

The Journey to 2026
In the next two years, Archer and its partners will finalize infrastructure, get regulatory approvals, and conduct test flights to ensure the system is reliable. This timeline includes:
- 2024-2025: Infrastructure development, pilot training, and initial test flights.
- 2026: Official launch of commercial eVTOL operations in Abu Dhabi.
When operational, the air taxi system will link key zones of the city and offer Abu Dhabi residents and visitors a fast, clean, and truly futuristic way to travel.
