San Antonio Airport Begins $1.4 Billion Terminal Project

San Antonio Airport, one of the fastest-growing airports in the state of Texas, will receive a massive, US$1.4 billion brand-new terminal. This project marks a significant step forward, aiming to enhance capacity, modernize facilities, and solidify the airport’s role as a key connector within the state and beyond.

Vision for the Future

San Antonio International Airport (SAT) is embarking on a transformative journey with the construction of its new Terminal C, a $1.4 billion investment aimed at doubling the airport’s size and preparing it for future growth. It will also allow better connections to other parts of the country and the world. Construction on the new terminal is set to begin on December 10, 2024. This project is part of a broader $2.5 billion strategic development program to modernize and expand SAT. By 2028, Terminal C will increase the airport’s capacity and enhance its role as a vital connector for Texans to destinations across the U.S. and globally.

Transforming the Travel Experience

Terminal C promises a state-of-the-art facility that reimagines the passenger journey. The 832,000-square-foot, 17-gate facility will nearly double the size of the existing terminals A and B. The terminal will introduce innovative amenities such as an outdoor courtyard for passengers who have passed through security. Additional upgrades include a multi-story ground transportation center with additional parking, the expansion of elevated roadways, a new customs inspection area, and airplane parking. These enhancements not only aim to streamline operations but also reflect the region’s growth and the increasing demand for travel through SAT.

San Antonio Airport: Unlocking New Opportunities

Terminal C will create approximately 6,000 jobs as part of the construction and operation phases, creating a significant economic boost for the region. The airport has entrusted Colorado-based Hensel Phelps to lead the construction efforts, leveraging their expertise in airport projects. Furthermore, the expansion provides opportunities for local contractors and businesses to participate in building what city officials have called a “transformative” gateway to San Antonio.

Addressing Growing Demands

San Antonio Airport set passenger volume records this year, with 1,032,610 travelers in July alone, according to KENS 5. These milestones boost confidence in its expansion plans to meet future needs.

Terminal C will also address the lack of space for wide-body aircraft and increase the airport’s ability to handle international flights. This expansion positions SAT as a critical hub in the region, rivaling major airports in Dallas and Houston. ​

Even so, the new terminal hasn’t been without controversy. San Antonio’s largest air carrier, Southwest Airlines, sued the city in September over the expansion.
Southwest’s suit argues that Airport Director Jesus Saenz gave the Texas-based carrier a verbal commitment that it would have space inside the new terminal. However, they ultimately offered Southwest the option to renew its lease at the aging Terminal A. A hearing on the matter was set for December but has since been postponed.
