On January 20, 2025, Donald Trump was inaugurated as the President of the United States for a second term, among his immediate actions was the implementation of executive orders to reverse policies and decisions made during Joe Biden’s presidency. One of the significant outcomes of Donald Trump immediate orders was the resignation of Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Administrator David Pekoske.
TSA Administrator’s Farewell Message after the Inauguration of Donald Trump
Pekoske, who had been leading the TSA since August 2017, announced his departure in a farewell message addressed to TSA employees. In his statement, he explained that Donald Trump’s transition team had requested his resignation.
“I will sincerely miss being part of this agency and having the opportunity to serve alongside this incredible team,” Pekoske wrote. “It has been an honor of a lifetime! I leave with the utmost respect for you and immense pride in what we have accomplished together since August 2017.”
In his message, he highlighted the trust placed in the TSA by the public, emphasizing the critical role the agency plays in ensuring secure travel and the smooth delivery of goods through transportation systems. He commended the workforce for their responsibility and professionalism, describing their work as embodying the best of America.
Pekoske’s Tenure at the TSA
Pekoske’s leadership at the TSA spanned two confirmed terms. After first being appointed and confirmed as the seventh Administrator of the TSA by the US Senate in August 2017 during the first term of Donald Trump, he was reconfirmed for a second term in September 2022. Throughout his tenure, he managed a workforce exceeding 60,000 employees and oversaw security operations at nearly 440 airports across the United States.
The TSA has yet to announce who will replace Pekoske as the agency’s Administrator.
Broader Personnel Changes in the Federal Government
On January 21, 2025, just a day after his inauguration, President Trump dismissed four more senior officials who had been appointed under Joe Biden’s administration. Additionally, he signaled that this was only the beginning of a significant reshuffle within the federal government.
“My Presidential Personnel Office is actively in the process of identifying and removing over a thousand Presidential Appointees from the previous Administration, who are not aligned with our vision to Make America Great Again,”
Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.
FAA Administrator Also Departs
In a related development, Mike Whitaker, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Administrator, had previously announced his intention to step down on January 20, 2025, coinciding with Trump’s inauguration. Whitaker, who served as the head of the FAA, confirmed his departure well in advance, signaling another major change in the leadership of a critical transportation agency.
