A Swiftair Boeing 737-400 cargo aircraft crashed near Vilnius Airport (VNO) in the early hours of November 25, 2024. The cargo plane, operating flight BCS18D for DHL, had departed Leipzig/Halle Airport (LEJ) at 02:08 CET and met its tragic end approximately at 03:30 CET (05:28 EET).
Swiftair crashed on Žirnių Street in Liepkalnis, a suburban area near the airport, colliding with a two-story residential building. The crash caused significant destruction, leading to a fire breaking out in the structure.
Reports from the Situation Coordination Division of the Fire Protection and Rescue Department indicate that there were four people aboard the aircraft: two pilots and two DHL employees. Emergency responders were able to extract one of the pilots from the cockpit, who regained consciousness at the scene. Unfortunately, another individual was pronounced dead, while two others were rushed to the hospital for emergency medical care.
Despite the severity of the incident, Vilnius Airport operations were not disrupted, allowing flights to continue as scheduled. The area surrounding the crash site, however, witnessed intense rescue and firefighting activities as authorities worked to manage the situation.
