Azerbaijan Airlines flight J28243, en route from Baku to Grozny, crashed near Aktau Airport in Kazakhstan. The Embraer ERJ-190 aircraft, carrying a total of 67 individuals, rapidly descended and crashed in a fiery explosion. This heartbreaking accident has sparked widespread attention, with videos circulating on social media capturing the moment the aircraft plunged to the ground in flames.
The aircraft had 62 passengers and 5 crew members on board. Among them, 25 people miraculously survived, including three children. However, the toll remains heavy, as 22 of the survivors sustained serious injuries and are now receiving medical treatment at nearby hospitals. Emergency services promptly extinguished the fire at the crash site, ensuring that the airport resumed operations shortly thereafter.
Potential Causes
While the cause of the crash has not been officially confirmed, preliminary reports shed light on possible factors. Sky News revealed that the pilot was attempting an emergency landing after a bird strike, a scenario known to severely impact aircraft performance. Additionally, flight tracking challenges posed by GPS jamming in the region compounded the situation. According to Flightradar24, the GPS interference caused the transmission of inaccurate ADS-B data from the aircraft, which interrupted tracking capabilities.
The timeline provided by Flightradar24 offers a clearer picture:
- Flight J28243 departed from Baku at 03:55 UTC.
- At 04:40 UTC, the ADS-B signal was lost, leaving a gap in the aircraft’s tracking.
- The signal briefly resumed at 06:07 UTC, moments before the crash occurred at 06:28 UTC
The Kazakhstani government has launched a formal investigation into the accident, seeking to uncover the sequence of events that led to the tragedy. The aircraft’s manufacturer, Embraer, has also pledged to assist authorities throughout the investigative process.
We will update this story as more confirmed information becomes available.
