Latvian-based airline airBaltic has announced the cancellation of 4,670 flights from all its bases for the summer season of 2025 due to its engine issues. The decision was revealed in a press release on January 2, 2025, citing “unexpected delays and prolonged engine maintenance” by its supplier, Pratt & Whitney.
Impact on airBaltic’s Airbus A220-300 Fleet
The airline reported that Pratt & Whitney’s failure to meet timely maintenance obligations has directly impacted the operational capacity of its Airbus A220-300 fleet. Pratt & Whitney informed airBaltic that several of its A220-300 aircraft would remain grounded into 2025 due to an ongoing engine shortage.
As a consequence, airBaltic will cancel 19 routes and reduce frequencies on 21 others across its bases. This decision will affect an estimated 67,160 passengers, highlighting the significant operational and customer impact. Despite these challenges, airBaltic confirmed it will continue to serve over 70 destinations across Europe and beyond.
airBaltic acknowledged that these engine issues, like many other airlines worldwide, facing external factors beyond its control, including global supply chain disruptions and maintenance constraints. The carrier expressed deep regret for the inconvenience caused by these cancellations and assured passengers that it remains committed to mitigating the impact.
“Minimizing disruption and maintaining reliable service remain top priorities,” the airline stated. airBaltic also emphasized its collaboration with Pratt & Whitney to resolve the maintenance delays and seek a sustainable solution.
Passengers with affected bookings are urged to check their reservations and either select alternative flights or request a full refund. The airline reaffirmed its dedication to supporting customers during this period of disruption.
Operating more than 130 routes from its bases in Riga, Tallinn, Vilnius, Tampere, and seasonally from Gran Canaria, airBaltic connects destinations in Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, and the Caucasus region.
