In a bid to revamp and expand its fleet, Air India has sealed historic orders with aerospace giants, Boeing and Airbus, purchasing up to 290 and 250 aircraft respectively. The landmark agreements were celebrated at the 2023 Paris Air Show, marking a significant chapter in the evolution of the Indian aviation industry. These extensive aircraft orders, part of Air India’s sustainable growth strategy, will equip the airline to tap into South Asia’s rapidly growing aviation market, poised to triple its in-service fleet in the next 20 years.
Air India’s Strategic Boeing Acquisition: 737 MAXs, 787 Dreamliners and 777X Jets

Air India’s order with Boeing includes 190 737 MAXs, 20 787 Dreamliners, and 10 777X jets, with options for an additional 50 737 MAXs and 20 787 Dreamliners. This massive acquisition, the largest for Boeing in South Asia, underscores the longstanding, 90-year partnership between Boeing and Air India.
The Boeing aircraft will not only renew Air India’s fleet but will also broaden the airline’s service offering in South Asia’s burgeoning aviation market. The Boeing jets’ superior efficiency and operational capabilities align with Air India’s ambitious plans for sustainable expansion in the region.
Air India Reinforces Airbus Partnership with a Major Aircraft Order

Alongside the significant Boeing order, Air India has also confirmed a substantial order for 250 Airbus aircraft, bolstering its transformation and growth strategy. The order includes 140 A320neo and 70 A321neo single-aisle aircraft, as well as 34 A350-1000 and six A350-900 wide-body jets. The airline had previously signed a Letter of Intent to acquire these aircraft in February 2023.
Air India’s Airbus order underpins a broader collaboration with the European aerospace giant. The airline has chosen Airbus’s Integrated Materials Solutions (IMS) from Satair to ensure optimal fleet availability. Additionally, Air India will be the launch customer for Airbus’ Skywise Core X3, the latest and most advanced aviation analytics platform.
Enhancing Air Travel with A350 and A320 Family Fleets
The orders mark the entry of the A350 into service in India, the world’s fastest-growing aviation market. The state-of-the-art, long-range aircraft will unlock the untapped potential of India’s long-haul market, allowing for new routes, enhanced passenger experience, improved economics, and sustainability.
Simultaneously, the A320 Family fleets, renowned for their efficiency and versatility, will continue to democratize and decarbonize air travel in India, catering to domestic, regional, and international levels. The A350’s clean sheet design, state-of-the-art technologies, aerodynamics, and use of lightweight materials offer a 25% advantage in fuel burn, operating costs, and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, compared to previous-generation competitor aircraft.
