At the Dubai Airshow, Boeing and Royal Jordanian have jointly announced a significant order for four 787-9 Dreamliner jets, marking a strategic step in the airline’s fleet expansion and modernization efforts. This new order, combined with the reconfirmation of a previous order for two 787-9s, brings Royal Jordanian’s total backlog for the 787-9 to six aircraft. This acquisition reflects the airline’s commitment to enhancing its operational capabilities and passenger experience.
Samer Majali, Vice Chairman and CEO of Royal Jordanian, emphasized that the decision to augment their fleet with additional 787-9 Dreamliners is a testament to the airline’s dedication to offering superior travel experiences. He highlighted the alignment of this move with Royal Jordanian’s broader strategy focusing on fuel efficiency, sustainability, and passenger comfort. Expanding Royal Jordanian’s Dreamliner Fleet for Long-Haul Growth
The new order builds upon Royal Jordanian’s existing fleet of seven 787-8 airplanes. The inclusion of the 787-9 Dreamliner, known for its extended range and larger passenger capacity, allows the airline to carry more passengers and cargo over greater distances. Capable of flying 296 passengers up to 14,010 km (7,565 nautical miles), the 787-9 will enable Royal Jordanian to expand its long-haul route network, building on the foundations laid by the 787-8.
Majali pointed out that Royal Jordanian’s current fleet of seven 787-8 Dreamliners has already been instrumental in connecting Amman with key global destinations. The addition of the 787-9 underscores the airline’s proactive approach to catering to the increasing demand for long-haul travel, further establishing Royal Jordanian as a leader in adopting advanced aviation technologies in the Middle East.
Boeing’s Support and Widebody Demand in the Middle East
In addition to the aircraft order, Boeing Global Services will provide modification services for Royal Jordanian’s in-service 787s, enhancing in-flight connectivity for passengers and crew. This service underscores Boeing’s commitment to supporting its customers beyond aircraft delivery, offering comprehensive solutions to improve operational efficiency and passenger experience.
Boeing’s 2023 Commercial Market Outlook (CMO) highlights the growing need for widebody airplanes in the Middle East, driven by increasing passenger demand between major population centers. The CMO projects that the region will require delivery of 3,025 new commercial airplanes by 2042, nearly half of which are expected to be widebodies, demonstrating the significant market potential for long-haul aircraft like the 787 Dreamliner.
