Hawaiian Airlines route changes
Hawaiian Airlines has announced plans to discontinue its nonstop service between Austin–Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) and Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) in Honolulu.
Launched in 2021, the route has served over 230,000 passengers. According to KXAN, which first reported the news, a Hawaiian Airlines spokesperson stated, “As we begin the exciting work to integrate our combined networks to offer our guests more flights and connections to more cities, we are making some initial adjustments to a few routes.”

Hawaiian Airlines currently operates the route using an Airbus A330-200. However, as the airline undertakes a network reshuffling program, it likely aims to reassign the widebody aircraft to other routes.
How Will Austin-Honolulu Passengers Travel After March 2025?
According to a Hawaiian Airlines spokesperson, starting March 27, passengers travelling between Austin and Honolulu will need to connect through San Diego, Seattle, or another airport.
The adjustment allows Hawaiian to reallocate aircraft to other routes within its network. This change comes after Alaska Airlines completed its acquisition of Hawaiian in September. Despite operating as one company, both airlines will maintain their distinct branding.
Austin Airport also confirmed the news on its official X account, announcing that Hawaiian Airlines will end the route in March 2025. However, passengers wishing to travel between Austin and Honolulu will still have the option to connect through five other domestic airlines serving the airport.
Some of these connections may be available via Alaska Airlines through Seattle or San Diego. Hawaiian Airlines will notify passengers with bookings between the two cities after the nonstop service concludes in March.
Hawaiian’s Exit Marks a Shift in Network: Alaska Airlines to Step Up Service
This marks a major shift in Hawaiian Airlines’ network, as the carrier has operated the Austin-Honolulu route for decades. With Hawaiian’s withdrawal, Alaska Airlines will be the route’s sole airline. To offset the reduced capacity, Alaska will introduce a second daily flight between the two airports starting June 12.
Hawaiian Airlines will also cease using the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner on its Honolulu-Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) route. The Dreamliner will operate between the cities until April 2025, after which it will be replaced by the A330.
