Iberia, the Spanish flag carrier, has taken delivery of its first Airbus A321XLR, marking it as the launch operator for the A321XLR. The A321XLR promises to revolutionize long-haul flights by combining extended range with exceptional fuel efficiency, paving the way for Iberia to expand its network and enhance its service offerings.
The newly acquired A321XLR will first serve Iberia’s European routes, familiarizing its crew and passengers with the innovative features before it embarks on its maiden transatlantic journey from Madrid to Boston later in November. The aircraft is powered by CFM LEAP-1A engines.

Reflecting on the significance of this delivery, Marco Sansavini, CEO & Chairman of Iberia, expressed pride in becoming the launch airline for Airbus’ newest innovation. He highlighted how the A321XLR allows Iberia to reach new, more distant destinations while maintaining high standards of efficiency, an advantage that aligns well with Iberia’s goals for expansion and sustainability:
“We are very proud to be the launch airline for this new Airbus aircraft. The A321XLR will allow us to reach new destinations, operating transoceanic routes and doing so in a more efficient way.”
Christian Scherer, CEO of Commercial Aircraft at Airbus, shared in the excitement, noting that the A321XLR is the result of five years of dedication to developing an aircraft that expands route options and enhances connectivity. Scherer emphasized the pride Airbus takes in marking this “first” with Iberia, recognizing the partnership’s potential to redefine air travel.
“Five years in the making, the newest member of the Airbus family is all set to join its first operator, Iberia. The A321XLR will enable countless new non-stop destinations; it truly opens a new chapter in air connectivity. It is another proud “first” for all of us at Airbus in our constant quest to innovate and bring value to our customers. We are pleased to share this special moment with a special customer: gracias y felicidades Iberia.”
Iberia A321XLR Passenger Experience
The A321XLR features an upgraded two-class configuration, seating 182 passengers and offering lie-flat business class seats with direct aisle access. This layout, coupled with the spacious Airspace cabin design, promises a new level of comfort across all classes. The aircraft also features XL overhead bins, which provide 60% more luggage capacity to streamline the boarding process for passengers and crew alike.
To elevate the passenger experience further, each seat is equipped with in-seat connectivity, allowing travelers to stay connected throughout their journey. Enhanced lighting systems are also installed to improve comfort and create a relaxing atmosphere for long-haul flights.
Performance and Environmental Impact
The A321XLR represents the latest advancement in Airbus’s eco-friendly aircraft lineup, building on the A320neo family to deliver an extended range of up to 4,700 nautical miles. This range capability is 15% greater than the A321LR, making the A321XLR ideal for transoceanic routes while maintaining fuel efficiency. In fact, the A321XLR consumes 30% less fuel per seat than previous-generation aircraft, reducing both NOx emissions and noise levels.
Airbus has already received over 500 orders for the A321XLR, signaling strong market interest in its ability to combine range, efficiency, and passenger comfort. Furthermore, the aircraft supports up to 50% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) today, with a goal of achieving 100% SAF capability by 2030, aligning with global initiatives to reduce aviation’s environmental footprint.
