On the 7th of April 2022, a DHL Boeing 757-200SF, registered as HP-2010DAE, performed an emergency landing at Juan Santa Maria International Airport in Costa Rica. The cargo aircraft had taken off from the same airport in the morning and after 25 minutes in the air, it requested to turn back. It is reported that the crew had detected a failure in the hydraulics system. The airplane landed on runway 07 at around 10 AM and skidded off the runway, which caused the plane to fall off the runway platform. The 757’s tail section snapped off because of this. The incident disrupted 57 flights and 8500 travelers at Costa Rica’s busiest airport, but the airport was re-opened at 3:30 PM again.
Luis Miranda, deputy director of civil aviation of Costa Rica said that the jet had just traveled approximately 35 miles from the airport when it asked permission to return from its intended journey to Guatemala City. He said that the jet’s sole crew members were the captain and co-pilot, and that the plane was carrying around 2 and 1/2 hours worth of fuel for the short flight. On social media, a footage shows the cargo slowing down as it approaches the dock, its brakes smoking. After then, it turns 180 degrees and slides off the runway. The right wing of the plane breaks off, and the plane splits in half near the tail. Firefighters arrived swiftly and doused the plane with foam. At the time of the collision, the weather looked to be bright and pleasant. The aircraft was built in 1999 and had been in use with DHL for 10 years and was managed by Infinity Transport.
“We can confirm that a DHL DE GUATEMALA, S. A. B757 sustained damage upon landing at Juan Santamaria airport in Costa Rica,” claimed DHL. “We are pleased to report that the crew were physically unharmed in the incident. One crew member underwent medical checks as a precaution,” wrote the DHL spokesperson. “We are coordinating with the airport authorities on moving the aircraft from the area near the runway.” The company also added that “We are pleased to report that the crew were physically unharmed in the incident. One crew member is undergoing medical checks as a precaution. We are coordinating with the airport authorities on moving the aircraft from the runway so that normal airport operations can be resumed as soon as possible.” An investigation is ongoing and the plane was reportedly written off.
